How can we help adoptees develop confidence, resilience, and a healthy mindset throughout every stage of life?
In this episode of Let’s Talk Adoption, Kim King is joined by educator, Certified WISDOM Coach®, and adoptive mom Tammy Young. Drawing from more than 20 years of teaching and her personal experience raising three adopted children, Tammy shares practical ways parents can help children recognize unhealthy thought patterns, build self-esteem, and develop resilience rooted in truth and God’s love.
Together, Kim and Tammy discuss:
- Why the “unspoken thoughts” adoptees experience matter—and how parents can create a safe space for honest conversations.
- Common questions adoptees may wrestle with as they grow.
- Helping children find their identity in Christ and remember they have never been alone.
- How our thoughts shape our emotions and behaviors.
- Practical ways families can strengthen healthy thought patterns and build resilience together.
- Encouragement for parents who want to support their children through every season of their adoption journey.

Helping Kids Build Soaring Self-Esteem and Mindset Skills for Life
Leveraging over 20 years of experience teaching all ages and skills, I have transitioned from the classroom to the coaching chair to help children develop the “mental fitness” they need to thrive. My journey as an educator has taken me across the globe, from teaching English as a Second Language in Japan to leading Social Studies classes in U.S. middle schools. Throughout these diverse environments, I discovered that regardless of the subject, children need three things to succeed: patience, persistence, and positivity.
As a Certified WISDOM Coach®, I use the power of story-based coaching to help young people embrace the power of their minds, build powerful self-confidence, and navigate the ups and downs of growing up. I believe that academic success is only one piece of the puzzle; teaching children how to handle disappointment, move through fear, and believe in themselves is the ultimate gift we can give them. As the mother of three diverse adopted children, I know firsthand the importance of resilience.
My coaching style is natural, open, and deeply supportive of the whole family. My goal is to make these life-changing mindset skills accessible and fun, helping your child manifest their dreams and become their own best friend.
When I’m not coaching, I’m usually enjoying the outdoors in Windsor, Connecticut, where I serve on the local Conservation Commission, or spending time with my dogs. I’ve been a lifelong dog owner and believe they are the ultimate teachers of resilience and joy!
